Laura Carlin

I had been looking forward to this lecture from laura Carlin for a long time. I really love her illustrations in the recent edition of Ted Hughs' The Iron Man, so I was excited to hear more from her.

It was great to hear about her methods and reasons behind how she illustrated the book. I love how she works in a very direct way, in some ways similar to my own methods of illustration.

I was really inspired by the way she made sets to photograph for the book, I thought that being to add shadows and depth in a 3 Dimensional way really gave the illustrations an edge. It was quite impressive how she had cut out each individual figure and se tup each individual scene! I would love to do something similar, although I would certainly have to collabarate with a photographer, as my photgraphy skills are somewhat more than lacking!

It is certainly a book i will often go back to, especially when it comes to the interplay of text and illustration, something that I feel I generally get wrong in my narratives.

I enjoyed looking at her portfolio, especially her sketches from her visit to Japan as, again, they were very direct ink drawings and paintings, which is a method I enjoy myself.
